Micro Mages

I’m going to be honest, I had no idea four-player games on the NES were a thing.

When I asked Marc Doull if he would be interested in recording an NES game for my website, he immediately suggested Micro Mages. I had never heard of this game, but turns out it is a “homebrew” game, having been developed long after commercial games stopped being published for the NES.

Micro Mages supports up to four simultaneous players through use of an adapter Nintendo produced. I asked Nate Lockhart and JohnWaynesGhost to join Marc and me for the recording, and it became a fun Saturday-afternoon gathering of four retro-loving gamers.

This was the first time I had tried mic’ing four people gathered around my 15-inch PVM. You’ll hear varying levels of clarity in the commentary and probably more room ambience than I would like to admit, but I’m glad I gave it a try.

I should also note that these guys know way more than I do about NES games and retro gaming history in general. I learned a lot of interesting facts during this recording!

Nerdy stuff

The original NES console used in this video was modified with Tim Worthington’s NESRGB mod (version 4.0) to produce an RGB analog signal.

The RGB signal was sent through the gscart switch v5.3 before being upscaled to 1080p in 60 frames per second with the RetroTINK 5X.
